Did you know that "Periodontal Disease" is the most common disease seen in small animal practice?
It's not surprising, really - we brush our teeth twice a day, but our pets don't!
80% of dogs over 3 years old and 50% of cats have a degree of dental disease! As vets, we are here to help ensure our clients' pets have a clean, hygienic, and pain-free mouth.
Plaque induces Periodontal Disease (PD) - the first stage of which is "Gingivitis" - red, swollen, painful gums that bleed easily. Bacteria produce foul-smelling substances that give the animal bad breath or "halitosis." Intervention at this early stage can reverse the disease processes.
What can we do to ensure our pets have pain-free mouths?
If we treat the animals at the early stages of disease, the disease process can be reversible. Pets with significant dental disease require the teeth to be examined, x-rayed, scaled and polished, and extractions made if necessary. All this work MUST be done under GENERAL ANAESTHETIC (GA). (GA) Only by using GA can we perform a thorough, pain-free examination and extractions.
We then add on a home care plan for the client and their pet. Just performing ONE cleaning will not provide ongoing dental care. That would be like you just brushing your teeth just once in your whole life! Home dental care must be ongoing - every day.
Comprehensive Dental Examinations & Treatments include:
1) Dental Consultation - to assess the pets' dental condition & advise treatment.
2) Admit the pet for a general anaesthetic.
3) Perform Full Mouth Dental X-rays - to assess all teeth above & below the jawbones.
4) Extract any diseased, dead or fractured teeth.
5) Scale & Polish - to remove all plaque, tartar, then polish the teeth.
6) Complete Dental Home Care Education
7) Book the pet in for 3 monthly Dental Checkups for Life.
